Neck trauma usually is divided into two (2) categories, blunt and penetrating trauma. A Blunt Neck Trauma-may result in the crushed larynx, expanding hematoma, tracheal disruption, and esophageal leak. Penetrating Neck trauma-may result in injury to major vascular structures, larynx, trachea, pharynx, and esophagus.
Most common neck trauma after a car accident or a sudden movement may include:
- Neck fracture (cervical vertebrae)
- Neck sprain
- Pinched nerve
- Spondylosis
- Whiplash
Blunt and penetrating trauma of the neck may result in life-threatening injuries that demand immediate attention and intervention on the part of the emergency physician and trauma surgeon. After neck surgery and during the healing process, having chiropractic care would fast track this healing process and help you get back to your normal life.
The most common chiropractic technique is spinal manipulation. Some spinal manipulation techniques commonly used are:
- The Flexion-distraction technique is a gentle manipulation to help treat herniated discs with or without arm pain. Your neck injury may have aggravated a bulging or herniated disc. Chiropractors use a slow pumping action on the disc instead of direct force to the spine.
- Instrument-assisted manipulation is another non-trusting technique. A specialized hand-held instrument is used and the chiropractor applies force without thrusting into the spine.
- Specific spinal manipulation is a technique where a chiropractor identifies spinal joints that are restricted or show subluxations. Using this technique, the chiropractor will help restore motion to the joint with a gentle thrusting technique. This gentle thrusting stretches soft tissue and stimulates the nervous system to restore normal motion to the spine.
